Pelican’s Pick of the Week!

We seem to have some tropical weather coming our way.  We think it will brush the coast and head north.  Hope all our friends are safe from T.S. Sandy in the coming days.

Grab a good book and cuddle up and weather the storm!

Good rainy day reads always mean the classics, or one of your old favorites.  Maybe Moby Dick orThe Old Man and the Sea.  For me I’ll take Jane Eyre or Caddie Woodlawn. But most importantly, be safe!!!

Pelican’s Pick of the Week!

This week’s pick from Pelican Bookstore is the second book in Ken Follett’s 20th century trilogy – Winter of the World. It is not necessary to have read the first book, Fall of Giants, but you will recognize and remember those characters if you have. Winter of the World picks up the story with the build up to World War II and provides you with a first hand account of life then. A great read, and highly recommended!

Pelican’s Pick of the Week!

It’s a gorgeous time of year at Sunset Beach! The weather is cooling off just slightly and you’ve practically got the beaches to yourself!

But one of the best parts about this area in the fall is the festivals! We’ve got the Sunset at Sunset Festival, the Oyster Festival and the Festival by the Sea, all right here! Here’s the information on these great festivals!

Sunset at Sunset:

Saturday, Oct. 6 2012 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the 6th Annual Sunset at Sunset Festival at Sunset Beach, NC. Sunset at Sunset begins at 10:00 near the Ingram Planetarium. Last year over 4,000 people attended! The 2012 Sunset at Sunset event will be fabulous! New vendors, new events, great music and tons of fun for everyone are in the plans.

NC Oyster Festival:

October 20-21, 2012 will mark the 32nd Annual North Carolina Oyster Festival offering a fun mixture of new activities and old favorites that are certain to entertain the entire family! People come from far and wide to visit the Oyster Festival, a favorite festival to anyone who has been.

The coastal waters of Brunswick County provide an abundance of the marine mollusks each year bringing over 30,000 people to Ocean Isle Beach to celebrate the tasty treat.

The North Carolina Oyster Festival will feature live entertainment, arts and crafts, vendors, festival food, NC Oyster Festival Road Race, NC Oyster Festival Tennis Tournament, Surf Contest, a girl’s Beauty Pageant, a kid’s areas, the Oyster Shucking Championship, and an Oyster Stew Cook-off. Admission is only $5 for adults and free for children under the age of 8. The festival goes from 9am to 6pm on Saturday and from 9am to 5pm on Sunday.

Festival By the Sea:

The Festival by the Sea is a two-day event to be held October 27th & 28th, 2012. The Holden Beach Merchants Association hosts the very popular “NC Festival by the Sea.” This is the only day of the year that you can walk across the Holden Beach bridge and each year several hundred take that high altitude stroll to stake out the perfect spot to view the parade.

The festival kicks off with a parade down the Holden Beach causeway. This is the only day of the year that you can walk across the Holden Beach bridge and each year several hundred take that high altitude stroll to stake out the perfect spot to view the parade.

Arts and Crafts vendors are open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Sat. and 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Sun. You’ll want to plan to be onsite for at least a couple of meals and a snack or two, just to sample a tiny portion of the food on hand.
