With Memorial Day here this week, we thought it would be a good idea to mention some great books veterans would enjoy. Jeffrey Shaara has written several books detailing the life of soldiers in combat in several wars, all fantastically written. We wish everyone a happy and safe Memorial Day and please take a moment to remember all of the great men and women who have fought for our country.

Pelican’s Pick of the Week!
Do you have someone in your life who is graduating this year, two great books for a graduate are “Oh the Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss or “The Last Lecture” by Randy Pausch. And two very spiritual choices are, “The Five Agreements” by Miguel Ruiz or the Dalai Lama’s “Essential Wisdom” or the “One Year Bible.” All offer great support for the new graduate.

Larry Bond — who co-wrote the best-selling “Red Storm Rising” with Tom Clancy — is coming for two events on May 19.
Bond — who’s written dozens of novels and several non-fiction books on submarine warfare — will give a talk and a book signing from 10 a.m. to noon May 19 at the Sea Trail’s property owners’ clubhouse, 200 Station Trail in Sunset Beach (next to Century 21). Then, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., he’ll greet fans and sign books at our bookstore. All proceeds from book sales at both events will go to Cat Tails, the non-profit, no-kill adoption facility.
We’ve also got a sneak peak at Mary Beth Whalen’s book that is scheduled out the first week of July set in our area. Isn’t it a beautiful cover? She will be in our area the week it is released stay tuned for dates and times.

The weather has been absolutely beautiful, Spring has truly sprung. These perfect 70 degree days are here but they won’t last forever, so take this opportunity to go out and explore nature. If you need some help we have Steven Lewers folding guides which are excellent for birding, shelling or fishing. We’ve even got a new one for this year for local snakes!
Also, if you’re looking for great ways to spend your time outdoors the new Sunset Beach park at the foot of the new bridge is a great spot for a sunny afternoon and a book!

Pelican’s Pick of the Week
This week instead of our normal book picks, we’ve picked a neat place to visit that is relatively near the bookstore is called the Vereen Memorial Gardens and is in Little River just as you come back into Brunswick County. You take the 179 turn off of 17 to come up through Calabash, but the entrance to the garden is almost as soon as you turn off of 17. It has several miles of hiking trails, nature trails/boardwalks across the marsh and tidal creeks, picnic tables under cover, gazebos to sit in, porch style swings for adults to sit and watch boats on the waterway, swings for children, porta johns, and docks that jut out into the waterway. It would a great place to take a picnic lunch and a book if you aren’t in to hiking or great for a family picnic.
