Along with Hurricane Irene came some inevitable damage to our area. None too major, but there is always some clean up after a big storm like that. Local author and great friend of the Pelican Bookstore, Jacqueline DeGroot was the first to check on one of our beloved Sunset Beach landmarks that didn’t fare the storm quite as well.
On Saturday after the hurricane she walked down to the Kindred Spirit Mailbox, located on Bird Island—a bit of a walk since there is no beach access anywhere near it. She took pictures and reported back on the damage she saw. The erosion of the dune in front of the box had left a meager amount of sand leaving it in a very precarious position and the bench had fallen backward and had become uprooted.
Jack, as she prefers to be called, was a bit disheartened; after all one of her novels The Secret of The Kindred Spirit centers around the famed mailbox. She used her connections at the Brunswick Beacon and through Facebook she assembled a team to head to the mailbox armed with shovels to fix the treasure of Sunset.
The repairs were a success and it looks as good as new, even though it’s a few feet back from where it was originally located. We would like to thank Jack for all her hard work organizing and getting the word out about our distressed mailbox. And a big thanks goes out to all those who volunteered their time and effort and took the long walk to the mailbox—Laura Lewis, Sandy and Kathy Lonsinger, Sharon Maple, Frank Nesmith, Sandy Raymond, Carol and Pete Scott, and Patrick Szymanski.
