Sunset Beach Free Summer Concert Series

Pelican Bookstore is proud to be a sponsor of the 2013 Sunset Beach Free Summer Concert Series. The concerts are every Wednesday starting May 29th and going through Labor Day. The events take place at The Village Park on Queen Anne St.  (one block behind Pelican Bookstore) under the gazebo. The concerts start at 6:30pm and the music keeps playing till 8:30pm. The best part about these concerts, other than the amazing bands, is that they’re all free! So grab a few chairs or a beach blanket and come out to a party in the park! Here’s the schedule for the summer:

Who Doesn’t Love Wine (And Strawberries)?

Strawberry and Wine Festival

As you may have already heard, Silver Coast Winery along with the Old Bridge Preservation Society is hosting the First Annual Strawberry and Wine Festival on Saturday May 4th. The event also has several sponsors (including Pelican Bookstore) and the proceeds from the festival will go toward the projects of the Old Bridge Preservation Society.

The event will run from noon until 6 pm and has a $5 admission.  The event will be a fun afternoon-there will be six hours of music from the Imitations, a chance to meet Marybeth Whalen (author of “The Mailbox” and numerous other novels) a dance contest, live dancing lessons, juried vendors, and an art show amongst all of the activity. There will be strawberry shortcakes, food and drink, and BBQ, Chicken Stew, and pork barbeque for sale as well. You can find more details about the event on our events calendar or on Silver Coast Winery’s website.

Here is a video of Anne Bockelman, of the Old Bridge Preservation Society, being interviewed by ATMC  about the festival. Don’t miss this great event, because really who doesn’t love strawberries and wine (and books)?

Sunset Beach Gets New Kiosk About Bird Island

On March 22nd at 11am the Bird Island Preservation Society will unveil it’s latest project to raise awareness about the unique paradise that is Bird Island. They have gifted the town of Sunset Beach with an information kiosk that will be on display in the gazebo parking area giving directions and information about Bird Island and it’s history.

The kiosk will tell visitors to walk approximately 1.2 miles west down the beach until they reach Bird Island which stretches for another 1.4 miles. The kiosk also has information about the island’s birds, animals and plant life, as well as the conservation efforts to preserve Bird Island as a Sea Turtle Sanctuary.

The hope is that this sign will not only encourage visitors to take the walk down to Bird Island but to also increase awareness about preservation and conservation efforts taking place to keep such a special place around for years to come.

Happy Groundhog Day!

Spring is on its way according to Punxsutawney Phil! The famous groundhog didn’t see his shadow this morning so that means an early spring for us, and we can’t wait! This was more than welcome news on a chilly February day when we woke up to below freezing temperatures. It’s supposed to be in the mid 50s by the afternoon, but this is the South–we don’t do cold weather! Thanks for the forecast, Phil!
